Bride of Re-Animator (1990) Directed by Brian Yuzna
Upon it’s release in 1985 Re-animator was a gory and darkly humorous breath of fresh air in the horror genre. Mixing mad scientists, zombies and the writings of H. P. Lovecraft the film was reviled and celebrated in equal measures. Producer Yuzna after directing the body horror oddity Society in 1989 then turned his attention to a sequel to Re-Animator. Obviously riffing on the Bride of Frankenstein and the final two chapters in Lovecraft’s Re-animator story this sequel is missing the black humour of the first film but does up the horror and gore quotient. Jeffrey Combs is back as Herbert West and portrays with more manic glee and arrogance than ever before. Set 8 months after the horror that ended the first film we see both West and his assistant Dan trying to make a whole reanimated person from different body parts and the heart of Dan’s girlfriend who died in the first film. So nothing goes to plan and the reanimated head (with added bat wings) of their nemesis Doctor Hill returns to make their lives miserable.
I know I’m asking a lot. But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it’s a price I’m willing to pay. And if I’m the only one, then so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not.
